Poems

Silence Maybe

Perhaps silence is the best strategy
D. Salinger choosing to disappear
Into the New Hampshire hills
Only an interview by a high school girl
To sate the hungry followers
In search of news of the Glass family
Or a Holden Caulfield sequel
Even now there is talk of secret novels
Hidden away until some future time
Ralph Ellison let his work speak
Harper Lee quietly stayed home

homework

oh man, I've got this poem to write.
promised I would. gotta do it.
the promises I make to friends
apparently I take more seriously
than those I make to myself:
like the one I made to myself
in January that I would try
(try, mind you)
to write a poem every day.
well, here one is.
it's not good. it's probably
not even a poem (I cannot judge)
but it is at least, this:
a promise fulfilled.

Bricks

What do the bricks know
After years and years
Of authors’ book talks
Biographies and poetry
Novels and memoirs
Writer’s words and voices
Offer solace perhaps
For bricks’ foundational work
Holding up the roof beams
Keeping out wind and rain
As the sound of books
Disappears in the night

Singer

In this shared end of all moments
Where there are only cover songs
In contention for number one
In this ultimate millisecond
Where are you in the last song
Of melodic disappearance
A notation for future bands
Alternately singing and playing
Among universes without clocks
