Poems

Context

With an inattentive waitress,
And mediocre food,
In a chilly drizzle,
After a long day,
I had the most
Enjoyable time tonight.
With you.

For the travelers

Cathedrals of glass and steel
trimmed with colorful delights
draw them in thronging millions
the travelers

They worship motion
they worship the hubris of flight made commonplace
they worship the illusion of freedom
the travelers

They gather in these great churches
faces lit with hope or excitement
or masked with the melancholy of distance
the travelers

May they be blessed by their gods
held safely in the palm of protection
may their journeys yield enlightenment
the travelers

NYC Haiku 7

Black and white and gray
Morning’s sensuality
Picasso in love

Droppings

quarter to midnight
and the air is sour with burnt cement

two enormous
construction/destruction engines
that look like
steamshovels and sound like
jackhammers
are perched on an overpass
the height of
a four story building,
devouring the roadway
as if it were a very large
but very fragile
breadstick

sloppy eaters, these two
chunks of concrete the
size of a man’s head drool
from their maws
and plummet to earth
in a steady tattoo

headlights above the cabs glare
like eyes and I think
there must be a metaphor
in all this

something about
human rapacity
or the transient nature
of man made things
or maybe it’s the
opening of
a science fiction story
or at least some
cosmic joke

but I got bupkis

NYC Haiku 6

March of the taxis
Up and down the avenues
Stop go stop and go
