The train blunders through the night
The plaintive whistle disappears
Down the iron tracks until there

The spider web glints in
Slant afternoon light
A larger spider now
Than when it first moved in
With flowered plants
Rent free occupancy among
Ceramic pots in the corner
Where the deck overlooks
Bay back yards and islands
As days shorten it is time
Soon an egg case for
Next spring’s residents

Your narrative so far,
Does it require a codicil,
A diminutive addition,
An explanation of today’s
Complexities derived from
Yesterday’s certainties gone
Awry, despite assurances,
Carefully articulated hopes,
Spun through the years.
