Your expectations are high walls
I once tried to climb
But now my knees don't bend as well,
My rope is frayed and my grappling hook has lost it's point
The climb is no longer a challenge
Your walls is not for climbing
They are your boundaries and my path goes past them.
To where there are unguarded meadows
Inviting me to sit
Inviting me.

Surround yourself with love,
Or, failing that, indifference.

I will write a poem
While I'm waiting for you to come home
It was a difficult day
But I am waiting up for you anyway
Because your day too was tough
And that is reason enough
It's late my love
Come home my love
Get in your car and drive
I am waiting for you to arrive.

The cat is gone and we bought a brand new chair.
We left dirty dishes in the sink overnight,
And opened a can of tuna unmolested.
I can write without an editor on my shoulder
And read without claws kneading my chest.
It is so damn lonely here without him.
I no longer have to save grocery bags
With which to remove cat shit from the litter box
And I don't have to get up at three am to let him out.
Three am was when he was attacked.
Four raccoons bit and clawed him until I chased them away.
Two days later I okayed a lethal injection.
We could leave for the weekend, just you and I.
No worries about finding someone to sit with him.
He always got so lonely without us.

There is no venom in my bite, love,
I'm not that kind of snake.
